I didn't live here yet in their brief heyday, but Tribe seem so prototypically Bostonian that playing a music videogame set in Boston last night reminded me of them. When I heard this song on MTV in 1991, I was sure that it had some creepy narrative underlying it that I just couldn't understand. Now I suspect they just threw together a bunch of supermarket-novel S&M lyrics with hints of something awful happening offstage and called it a day. If you divine some actual sense to them, please don't tell me; I'm probably not mature enough yet.
Anyway, I gripe about how Boston seems to produce more than its share of bands that veil themselves in bland gothiness for no reason, but of course, the key is the "no reason". I complain because many of Boston's bands, like Tribe, are very good in ways that don't seem to require eyeshadow for their execution. Not up to me, though, is it?
[I'm not sure what's going on with this disc on Amazon. Either it's extremely collectible or it's only worth a buck. Your guess is as good as mine.]
