Brainiac - "I Could Own You" (mp3)

That's a whole lot of urgency for someone with as much control of his situation as singer Timmy Taylor is claiming to have. Maybe he'd sound mean in a metal band, but luckily he had Brainiac, who play indie rock like a gambler tearing apart his room looking for something to pawn.

Guitarist John Schmersal formed Enon after Taylor's 1997 death broke the band up. Over time, Enon have developed so much perversity and nervous energy that, listening to old Brainiac records now, I'm willing to consider the possibility that Schmersal was the band's real core and everyone else thought they were in Pearl Jam. But this song sounds like a group effort.

[From Smack Bunny Baby, Brainiac's 1993 first album.]

Colin Holden is both a friend of mine and an artist whose work I really, really like. For a while he's been threatening to put up a webpage of it, and at last he has! One of the pieces will be familiar to some of you.

The page doesn't mention just how large everything is, though in many cases you can get a sense of it by looking at the detail images. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen the finished version of "The various tensions inherent within western civilization condensed..." in person, which I hope to remedy soon. (Close-ups here, here, here, here, here, and here.)
