I've seen John Darnielle perform this song (originally written by Joel Huschle) once, and heard several more live recordings of it. Sometimes the audience laughs, and, more rarely, sometimes Darnielle plays the whole thing as a joke. Usually, though, the song's absurdity, and the absurdity of making people sing along to it, are a quiet subtext. I'm being vague because you kind of have to hear it to understand.
