Mocket - "Pearl Drop" (7" version)

Ten years ago. Pacific Northwest. New wave started to come back, but then slipped away again because (1) it hadn't been gone long enough, (2) it didn't have disco in tow to widen its base, and (3) not enough people heard Mocket's genius first album Bionic Parts. This version of "Pearl Drop" preceded the album, with different lyrics and a rougher performance that makes Mocket's origin in riot grrl and garage rock more obvious. Actually, the riot grrl thing is not hard to hear anyway, listening to Bionic Parts now, but at the time, hearing people play synths and sing about technology without fetishizing the 80s as such placed Mocket in a whole different world from the other stuff I listened to. (They had some company, though largely from Matt Steinke's other band, Satisfact.)

[Buy the 7" from Up Records or the album from Punk In My Vitamins.]
