Sounds nothing like Soul Coughing, except that both bands use a sampler
full of interesting sounds to create this kind of murky street-fair
atmosphere. Fabulous effect; I'm curious if it would work on
non-beat-driven music.
Beneath that, a satisfying but not crucial example of a particular British art-rock form that never quite made it over here much... think of 'heavy' era Wedding Present (Bizarro/Seamonsters) or Wolfhounds/Moonshake, with the Blue Aeroplanes their effete cousins. It strikes me that Mclusky owe a lot to this kind of thing (though not this band particularly). Everyone over here can spot the Pixiesisms, but to Mclusky the Pixies tropes represent abandon, while something else -- this -- is that horribly solid foundation from which they sometimes desire freedom.
Context notes: Came out in 1996, reissued now. Sounds thin (mismastered?), no liner notes, godawful 1991 day-glo cover art.
