Feb. 20th, 2004 12:38 pmReports are that Sandoval County, NM will allow same-sex marriages. Not "may", "will". I'm still looking for a solid cite on that. This page:
http://www.abqjournal.com/news/state/
suggests it's going on, but I'm not coughing up $8 to read the actual article.
The mayor of Salt Lake City has apparently also said he's considering ordering the issuance of egalitarian licenses.
When I first heard that "rogue officials" were behind the SF marriages, I had this strong feeling that I should be able to tune in some TV channel and watch them in a daring high-speed car chase trying to elude, I don't know, someone or other.
I have a few friends who feel that municipal disobedience just hurts the cause of gay marriage in the long run. I don't have a compelling counterargument, but nor do I find myself agreeing with them much. If anything, it calls attention to what a patchwork marriage laws are to begin with (and a chimera!) which can only make the national debate saner (i.e. I'm not thrilled about talking to people who favor a national constitutional amendment banning gay marriage rights, but it only really sets my teeth on edge when they think it's okay because the federal government is already the entity defining marriage -- whoops!)
In summary: rogue officials, go go go!
